You might get better results if you forget about using RAID all together
For example, GlusterFS supports “disperse” volumes which act like RAID5/6. It has the advantage that you can maintain access to things even if a whole server goes down. If you are using local RAID for redundancy and that server goes offline you’ll be missing files.
