Preliminary success - compiled, installed and mounting on MacOSX
10.8.5 (our production rollout here).

Finder in preview mode loads up a folder with 406 images quite
quickly, and scrubs back and forth at reasonable speed (much better
than SMB, comparable to NFS).  My test machine is quite old however,
so I need to push it to a better machine to get some good performance
and usage stats.

Now to find some willing volunteers to put it through it's paces.
Shouldn't be too hard, because folks here hate SMB. :)
