An update -- I found out that I have an unfortunate combination of versions.

Node 1 has 4.1.5
Node 2 has 4.1.5
Node 3 (has been updated the other day) has 7.1.1 (!!) but it joined fine with
the other two...
Node 4 (trying now) has 7.1.1 and crashes

I will try with 4.1.5
