I have observed that the slowness is because it is waiting to acquire 
the lock held by the client.  A patch to make the command work without 
taking locks has been merged recently to the release-7 branch 
(https://review.gluster.org/#/c/glusterfs/+/23883/)  and will be 
available in glusterfs-7.1.  Note that glusterfs-3.12 is EOL'ed.
