[Gluster-users] Is it safe to add one brick with data and one empty brick to a 2-node replica set?

Technically that's unsupported and produces "unexpected behavior". In 
reality that unexpected behavior does exactly what you're asking, as 
long as it's the left-hand brick that contains the files. (left-hand as 
listed in the volume creation order).
