Yep that's fine, I do it with ext4 and btrfs. The only requirement is
extended attributes (which everything does these days). If in doubt you
can test with:
# touch hello.txt
# setfattr -n user.foo -v bar hello.txt
# getfattr -n user.foo hello.txt
# file: hello.txt
user.foo="bar"
# rm hello.tx
