I'm not sure if this list will match your particular need (running
across multiple hosts), but here are some tools we use to benchmark:

- iozone
- dbench - this tests small file operations quite well
- bonnie
- filebench - a very versatile configurable benchmark tool, with
option to provide different kinds of workload (webserver, database,
etc.)
