Usually ,
the server is patched and then the client. So your order of update is untested and nobody can tell you what version to use for the client .
You have to try it yourself, and see which one works for you.

As usually the upgrade is started from the server, try to upgrade to v6.<latest> or v7.<latest> and if it works without issues - then upgrade the real clients.

You should first upgrade the cluster and then the clients. Supporting older clients is based on the cluster.op-version (the higher it is, the newer client you should use).
Yet, your version is quite old and you should consider upgrading.
