I've done it, nothing died or exploded. On Debian / Ubuntu it's a plain dpkg install and doesn't seem to restart any daemons, which I found a bit surprising. All seems to work, but I'm still seeing occasional problems with 'file has vanished' when rsyncing from the gluster volume.
