Hi Mickey, 3.0's prime focus is virtualization related enhancements. Dynamic volume
manager (which allows hot-add/remove) is scheduled for 3.1 release. It is planned for Q1
of 2010. We are also working on file level cloning (writable snapshots), native NFSv3
translator and S3 compatible protocol. Plan is aggressive. A team of 25 members are
working very hard towards the schedule. Simultaneously we have brought in some serious
framework related enhancements in 3.0 addressing stability and reliability.
As you can see, major improvement in 3.0 is self-healing. It not only benefits
virtualization, but also general purpose file serving.
Additionally, Gluster Platform allows us to give a hardened pre-configured system in the
form of embedded software appliance (compare it to cluster version of open-filer). This
way, a large number of variables (OS and underlying disk file system related bugs) are
removed. Installation has only 2 screens. Entire management is through the browser.
I think once a quarter, we should plan for Gluster Roadmap Meeting through IRC.
At Supercomputing 09, GlusterFS will also be exhibited by Intel, Raid Inc and Mellanox. We
will also be there. Please let me know if any of you are attending.
