There was an email where these python2 changes were causing problems
with upgrading. As far as I know this has not been fixed yet. I need to
dig through emails to see who reported it (and where?) and who was
working on getting it resolved.

I do not think this should be a blocker. Xavi explained it in
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1421649#c5 as well. Bug
1421956 is the correct blocker. (and that is the next one on your list)
