Without looking closely, that sounds like a bug in the 3.4 branch, probably somewhere in the
generated Makefiles.

What happens if you copy the build stuff (autogen.sh, configure.ac, and all Makefile.am's) from
the head branch to there, and try the whole process again? (autogen.sh and onwards)
