I have this instead. 

 volume unify
         type cluster/unify
         subvolumes ds-afr
         option namespace ns-afr
         option scheduler rr
 end-volume
 
in /etc/glusterfs/glusterfs-server.vol 

It's working fine, unless I am missing something. :)
