I had issues w/ dpkg not being able to successfully lock the package
> directory, so Debian etc based distros might be out.


You would have to wait for fuse to permit mmap() of O_RDWR files for that to
work (maybe 2.6.25 kernel). probably there is a way to disable dpkg to use
mmap() based I/O at build time (most packages using mmap() for I/O do have
option to swith to read()/write() I/O)
