In our environment the systems all had raid controllers so the LVM
would only fail if we lost the raid array.

As a general rule I use LVM on all my systems disks.
It has saved me a few times.

On the other hand gluster is designed to just handle a bunch of
individual disks so there is some value in the simplicity of just
using raw drives.

Our requirement was for simple mirroring of a VERY large filesystem
so using a hardware raid array was the easiest way to go.
As a general rule this is ok.
We have several gluster volumes built on top of an LVM
underlying structure.
